The Summer of Drowning really is fantastic isn't it? I was very disappointed not to see it on the Booker list this year. I think Burnside is the kind of writer who will see his name on that list at some point in the not too distant future.William Rycrofthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15056188088340973039noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7534509012046591314.post-6318069426815797722011-10-12T10:36:56.256+01:002011-10-12T10:36:56.256+01:00Hi Will - wow what an interview!

I'm incredibly grateful to him for giving me the time to pass things back and forth a bit, it really helped to probe a little deeper into his thoughts on certain things.

I think your reaction to his fiction is a fairly honest and I would think typical one. I felt something similar although I read back on his earlier writing after reading Living Nowhere. The three books you have bought since are all very rewarding reads and show a genuine development in his fiction (and the quality of his memoir). I hope you enjoy them.William Rycrofthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15056188088340973039noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7534509012046591314.post-27477767650730579252009-08-06T08:14:22.131+01:002009-08-06T08:14:22.131+01:00Great interview, William, and quite a coup!
My ex...Great interview, William, and quite a coup!

My experience of Burnside is initial enthusiasm, for The Dumb House when it came out, followed by alienation (The Mercy Boys, for someone with a fondness for BleakLit, was just too goddamn depressing) and ultimately disappointment (with The Locust Room, which I didn't much like, though looking back I can see that it was a very interesting take on a potentially hackneyed subject).

However. I have recently begun a reacquaintance with his stuff, mainly by buying up his more recent stuff - A Lie About My Father, The Devil's Footprints, Glister - without actually taking the step of diving in and reading them. I will hasten to do so now.John Selfhttp://theasylum.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.com
