I read Fun Home fairly quickly as prep for reading this one but can see now how it works better in the ways that you've mentioned Are You My Mother falling short. That said, I think she's a fabulous, intelligent and innovative writer. I'll be looking forward to what she produces next.William Rycrofthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15056188088340973039noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7534509012046591314.post-89729890445715690692012-08-08T10:41:31.873+01:002012-08-08T10:41:31.873+01:00Oh no, I am worried I am going to come across all ...Oh no, I am worried I am going to come across all bah-humbug about this book but after loving 'Fun Home' so much and being so excited about this one... I didn't care for it.

the meta aspects were clever yet only initially. I got quite bored with all the therapy and started to get peeved that Bechdel seemed to be comparing herself with Woolf. I also didn't feel like I came away knowing anything about her mother, just her and her own issues.

Is that awful? Great review though Will as ever.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7534509012046591314.post-47246075725972710372012-07-05T00:23:44.004+01:002012-07-05T00:23:44.004+01:00What a lovely comment! If you're looking for other quirky graphic titles I should mention the recently published Days of the Bagnold Summer", A Taste of Chlorine", and maybe even An Atlas of Remote Islands which isn't a graphic novel per se but uses graphics and words in a unique way to make one of the best books I've ever enjoyed!William Rycrofthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15056188088340973039noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7534509012046591314.post-84240313246971976532012-07-04T20:30:01.029+01:002012-07-04T20:30:01.029+01:00What a lovely review! I do like graphic novels and comics: either Marvel fantasy or something quirky. This certainly seems to fall into the latter.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
